First and foremost, I will remember him as not only as a  giant of a civil rights leader, but as a leader for all people everywhere.  He led with so much passion, courage and grace.

He was mighty.

I loved him.

Heartbreaking.

( OMG!  Someone please take The Occupier's phone away.  And glue his lips together.  With crazy glue.)

I man of decency and love of this country, even with all it's faults.  A loss at any time, but especially now, when we needed him the most. RIP Elijah Cummings. You will be missed.

Baby Angel: Dark Skin Tone on Messenger So sad about Elijah. Rest in peace Elijah!  (though something tells me he will be continuing to support and stand up for us all from the other side).  ..."In recent years, Cummings seemed particularly aware of the ephemeral nature of his existence, and the mandate we all have to seize the minute we're given. More than once, he could be heard discussing the prospect of "dancing with the angels,"....

Trish, thank you so much for that wonderful article.   I'm too shocked at this news to say much, so I will just put two quotes of Mr. Cummings from that article below.  They are, I believe, a gift he left behind to all of us among a lifetime of service to others.

"When we're dancing with the angels, the question will be asked: in 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing?"

"I only have a minute, only sixty seconds in it... Just a tiny little minute, But eternity is in it."

May he dance with the angels and remain in our memories as a blessing.

He gave me strength. Watching him and feeling the light going through him gives me strength every time I watch this video

Speaking to a red rimmed Michael Cohen who is finally telling the truth to Congress, he says, "This is part of your destiny, and I mean that from the depths of my heart. When we are dancing with the angels, the question will be asked, In 2019 what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy in tact?"

When asked about his not liking the PResident and being biased he said,

"This is not about liking or not liking  the president. This is about democracy!  This is about generations yet unborn. That is what this is all about!  And I'm begging, I'm begging the American people to pay attention to what is going on. Because if you want to have a democracy in tact for your children and your children's children and generations yet unborn, we have got to guard this moment."

According to the Baltimore Sun, he died in hospice. He's been ill for some time, but chose to keep it quiet. His wife notes here that he worked up to the end. I read elsewhere (but now can't remember which news site) that he was still signing bills and paperwork from his bed the day before he passed. My gut tells me he had his ducks in a row, and as Chair of the Oversight Committee he gave plenty of instruction and documentation on how and where to go in his absence.

As noted above, he knew what we were facing. I'm sure he'll be watching from above as this all goes forward. Tho somehow I think he'll have less worry about the outcome from his vantage point. He was very eloquent. He will be missed. I grew up in Baltimore, but moved away after high school, so his tenure was after I was gone, meaning I was not as aware of his work until the last few years, unfortunately.

I just can't get past the fact that Elijah Cummings is gone.

What kind of world would let him, of all people die, and to leave us with the likes of Moscow Mitch?  And how many hearts will Dick Cheney have transplanted into his body, before they realize that none of them  want to live there?

LOL ROTF!!!!  (The part about the hearts that don't want to live in Cheney) I saw the movie with my husband about Cheney (VICE) it was great - gives a real view of how the GOP planted the seeds that have enabled them to be able to get away with so much.

Sometimes people do even greater work after they pass. His words are already being replayed by millions. He's becoming a kind of saint and  a model of heart strength like Martin Luther King.

Obama will be speaking at the funeral for Elijah Cummings on Friday in Maryland.

For a brief moment in time the world will right itself again.  A great orator and former President will be speaking about the life of a humble and fierce giant of a human being, a protector of our nation.

For a precious few hours, our nation will be humming at a beautiful and high vibrational level.  I bet that even if you can't watch it live,  you will still be able to feel it if you "tune in".

Watching the funeral of Elijah Cummings right now I don't feel sadness (surprisingly) I feel the exaltation and high vibration level of this new Angel: Elijah. Even Hillary Clinton remarked to celebrate the day, that it was Elijah going home.

It was so warming and lovely to hear Nancy Pelosi state that the house voted, in wonderful bi-partisan fashion, to have Elijah buried in the same catafalque that former President Abraham Lincoln did!

Listening to President Obama's speech made me miss him so much. What a wonderful orator and President. Pres. Obama said: "May God Bless the HONORABLE Elijah Cummings" - May God Bless Elijah! - Amen!... (and President Obama too!)

@lovendures, Yes!  I agree that Elijah is our new angel, and believe he will call on our better angels to guide us.  I just watched Obama's eulogy to Elijah.  I was peacefully exhaling a lot, with a wonderful feeling of hope and sanity.   And then, @triciact, like you, I found myself really missing Obama.  My husband and I looked at each other and let out this aching sigh.  I loved what Obama wryly and truthfully stated about genuinely praying "for" someone, rather than praying "about" them.  Also how that title "Honorable" can be bestowed on anyone, but being honorable is something entirely different. Really moving.

I'm a native Baltimore girl, so Elijah holds a special place in my heart.

Since he died I've been hearing his words in my head -- so many things he said. One time he said that 500 years from now people will remember this moment and they will remember what our people had done to preserve our democracy.

@lovendures

Lovendures, you started this thread and then said someone should take the mic away from you.  But your first post shows your own pure heart and makes me happy to know you.

“I love this man. I loved every minute I ever spent with him, every conversation we ever had,” said Mr. Clinton, 73. “I loved his booming voice. But we should hear him now in the quiet times at night and in the morning when we need courage when we get discouraged, when we don’t know if we can believe anymore. We should hear him.”

"...and I was thinking I’d want my daughters to know how much I love them, but I’d also want them to know that being a strong man includes being kind. That there’s nothing weak about kindness and compassion. There’s nothing weak about looking out for others. There’s nothing weak about being honorable. You’re not a sucker to have integrity and to treat others with respect."

"...I was sitting here, and I was just noticing the honorable Elijah E. Cummings, and this is a title that we confer on all kinds of people who get elected to public office. We’re supposed to introduce them as honorable, but Elijah Cummings was honorable before he was elected office. There’s a difference. There’s a difference if you were honorable and treated others honorably outside the limelight, on the side of a road, in a quiet moment counseling somebody you work with, letting your daughters know you love them."

"Our children are the living messengers we send to a future we will never see. He would say, and he would remind all of us that our time is too short not to fight for what’s good and what is true and what is best in America. 200 years to 300 years from now he would say people will look back at this moment and they will ask the question, what did you do? And hearing him, we would be reminded that it falls upon each of us to give voice to the voiceless and comfort to the sick and opportunity to those not born to it and to preserve and nurture our democracy."

    -President Barrack Obama

"It is no coincidence, is it? That Elijah Cummings shared a name with an Old Testament prophet, whose name and in Hebrew the Lord is my God, and who used the power and the wisdom that God gave him to uphold the moral law that all people are subject to. And because of all people are equal, like the prophet hour, Elijah could call down fire from heaven."

"...but he also prayed and worked for healing. He weathered storms and earthquakes, but never lost his faith. Like that Old Testament prophet, he stood against corrupt leadership of King Ahab and queen Jezebel, and he looked out for the vulnerable among us. He lifted up the next generation of leaders, he even worked a few miracles. And he kept reminding us, life is no dress rehearsal, the American people want to live their lives without fear of their leaders."

"...And toward the end of his life he said, “I am begging the American people to pay attention to what is going on, because if you want to have a democracy intact for your children and your children’s children and generations yet unborn, we have got to guard this moment. This is our watch.”

    -President Hillary Clinton

“I want you all to know that it was not easy. What [he] did was not easy. And it got infinitely more difficult in the last months of his life when he sustained personal attacks and attacks on his beloved city,”

“I felt very strongly that they were trying to tear him down and we needed to make sure he went out with the respect and dignity that he deserved,” she said, her voice rising to a shout. “This was a man of the utmost integrity. DO YOU HEAR ME? HE HAD INTEGRITY!”

If you haven't listened to the key speakers at Elijah Cummings funeral, you should.  Obama spoke as I imagined he would.  He was once again our Comforter in Chief and a balm of wisdom and heartfelt love.  Cummings' 2 daughters were eloquent and were shinning examples of his legacy and certainly carry his spirit with them.

I believe that he was born to be here during this time.  From when he tried to integrate a swimming pool in his youth to his remarkable actions regarding this remarkably challenging time and everything in between.

I am reminded, lest I have forgotten, that my actions and words matter.  They matter to those who are here today, and to those future generations yet to come.  Yes, what I do, this one  person in a sea of billions matters.  I want that ripple in the water I make to create a positive impact.  It is imperative that this ripple brings forth good.

I hope that if I am mindful of this thought, the greater my chance of success.  The thinking is easy, the action is more difficult to execute sometimes.

@jeanne-mayell

Thank you for those beautiful words. ?

Thank you for all of the quotes that you so thoughtfully posted that were spoken earlier today Unk-p. SO powerful and beautiful.  I especially loved what his wife said.

I thought I would add this video of a song which I thought of today when thinking about Cummings.

Going Home.

It is a is a spiritual written from the melody of Dvorak's Largo from his New World Symphony.  This version is sung by the UK boys choir Libera.

I cry every time I hear it. Every. Single. Time.
