Technology Prediction II: How Technology and Innovation Could Save us from Climate Change?

Would like to hear what people know about what innovators are doing about climate change, and then use that as a jumping off point for what we feel intuitively innovation & technology may be able to do to help us.

There are always efforts underway:

1. Building design - architects are coming up with ways for buildings to survive coastal storms and storm surges. See the Spaulding Rehab Hospital on Boston Harbor.

2. What's being planned in the way of dikes to protect coastal cities from being deluged?  The Dutch are the most advanced in this area, since Amsterdam has been below sea level for centuries. What is the highest SLR (sea level rise) that levees, dikes and storm barriers could handle?

3. Food - are they developing drought resistant crops?  They better hurry up.  Is the World Food Bank looking into this? They better hurry up.

3a. Drought resistant trees?  Bug resistant trees?

4. Atmospheric seeding to absorb atmospheric carbon. I don't like this one. I think it could have a huge negative impact.  But I know there have been experiments.  Bill Gates was funding some efforts of this kind.

5. Heat resistant housing. --  I had a dream back in 1989 that in fifty years (which would now be 2040) people were building below ground for cooling.  So houses, shops, were starting to be located about one story down.  You'd walk down steps to enter shops. This would provide natural air conditioning.

6. Climate controlled farming. I keep getting an image of vast acres of greenhouses with flexible roofing to allow rain in when it comes, but in a controlled way, so it doesn't drown crops, to control temperatures, and irrigation.

7.Desalination: the Israelis have been doing this for years. I heard San Diego was planning on it.

8. What else?

Great topic, Jeanne!

You are correct about the desalination plant in San Diego County (in the city of Carlsbad, in northern San Diego County). It opened in December 2015 and is the largest such plant in the United States.

There are many other desalination plants around the world, including in Australia, Chile, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and other nations. Different technologies are used, some better than others. Here's a list of desalination plants:

Thank-you, Grace for the information!

Is desalination a viable technology for the future? I understand it is fuel intensive.  Will they be able to fuel it with sustainable fuels?  Also how will these plants work when the seas are rising exponentially over the next 50-75 years?  They will have to plan for that - place them far enough inland that they won't be deluged.   Can they make enough fresh water to supply whole cities around the globe?  They will need it!

There are so many different desalination methods. The technologies continue to evolve, with a lot of research going into reducing energy consumption (which can be high) and minimizing environmental impact. Definitely room for improvement, and scientists are working on it. According to Wikipedia, "approximately 1% of the world's population is dependent on desalinated water to meet daily needs."

Saturn and jupiter conjunct every 20 year, so this cycle is 20 years long.

But, they continue to do so in a certain pattern. Conjunction is happening in a earth element signs for a long time. From 1802 it is happening in earth sign. One interesting fact is before breaking this elemental cycle, conjuction in new element will happen once. In 1822 the conjuction happened in fire element for the last time. After that conjunction continued to happen in earth signs. In 1980 air element conjunction signaled the arrival of new era.

We definitely saw change, soviet union fell and with it communism. People rejoiced thinking about arrival of free world and globalisation. IT industry boomed. Internet arrived. Actually those twenty years was a forewarning how society would progress for next two centuries.

When jup-sat conjunction went back to earth element at 2000, dot com crash happened. And it slowed down the effect for a bit. On the other hand, what was supposed to be a free world became a unipolar world. Fossil fuel use continued. But wireless technology is now a part of our daily life and digitization of everything is happening. So the air energy is still working. But, earth energy is not quite out of the system yet.

What now ?

Earth cycle gave us scientific materialism and industrial society. Capitalism was the dominat system of this era. It gave us comfort but it is leaving us with the climate change problem.

Now it is impossible to say how things will develop for next 200 years. Because next break will happen in 2179 AD and from 2219 AD water cycle will start fully. But if we can see the current developments we will be able to see a pattern.

1. Soviet union and communism fell at 1990. Capitalism will fell between 2015-2025. This probably started with brexit and trump as US president.

2. Just as fossil fuel usage thrived in previous era, it is time for renewable energies.

3. Communication has greatly improved, telepathy is the new frontiers. But we are still some decades away from that.

4. Aviations will improve greatly. Flying cars and supersonic aircrafts(more widespread use) will be the new modes of travel.

5. Space colonies are a given. Our resources will come from there in future. But, conflicts will arise between nations for their control.

6. Rays will be used as a weapons and treatments of diseases.

7. Similarly their use for medical treatment will increase.

8. Use of robots in household and military will increase.

I could have include new education system, society, goverments but kaliyuga and piscean age is also ending, so we have to consider effects of dwapara yuga and aquarius age too. By 2030 all of them will be in running. Future is a mix between all three major epoches.

Jeanne,

Recently, scientists at the University of Manchester hit a breakthrough with desalination using graphene oxide. Graphene is a highly conductive (polar molecule) and also extremely impermeable (its mainly being studied in relation to energy efficiency and battery longevity). However, they discovered that the addition of oxygen to graphene opens up "holes" in the molecular membranous structure large enough to allow water through but small enough to trap sodium on one side. This makes it a perfect "sieve" for desalination.

To anyone interested:

www.futurism.com is an amazing website to watch for upcoming advancements in society. A lot of what they talk about jives things I've seen happening in the future.

Cool things that are being talked about:

1) Elimination of traditional banks using blockchain and bitcoin. It's a securer means of transactions that removes the "middleman" and makes you more accountable to your finances. The only downside I see with this is that there is going to be a major fight against big banks like Goldman Sachs and even the Federal Reserve.  https://futurism.com/experts-are-gathering-to-discuss-how-blockchain-will-transform-our-future/

2) Greater understanding of quantum mechanics and heightened usage of quantum computing using time crystals. I really don't understand this concept, except that it would enhance robotics, computational memory, and even space flight. https://futurism.com/the-first-quantum-computer-you-own-could-be-powered-by-a-time-crystal/

3) Eradication of certain cancers is possible by 2050. They have a new trial vaccine that prevents early relapse in cancer patients by boosting immunity and targeting only cancer cells.  https://futurism.com/clinical-trials-of-a-new-cancer-vaccine-show-that-it-may-actually-work/  ;    https://futurism.com/researchers-find-a-way-to-create-cancer-fighting-cells/

4) Hyperloops are going to be a thing eventually.  https://futurism.com/hyperloop-one-just-released-11-possible-routes-futuristic-transport-system/

5) Our population is going to reach 9.9 billion by 2050, not because more people are being born but because more people are living longer.  https://futurism.com/videos/the-worlds-population-could-hit-9-9-billion-by-2050/

6) In my second to last post on the other forum thread I talked about education needed to catch up if automation becomes more prominent. This came out today: https://futurism.com/with-automation-looming-the-us-needs-to-make-education-affordable-or-fail/ This also came out today:  https://futurism.com/heres-proof-that-automation-is-transforming-every-aspect-of-our-society/ Automation will become more prominent and soon.

7) Global warming (anything):

- Climate Change Causes Immense Canadian River To Dry Up In Just Four Days

- 2017 Is Set To Be The Hottest Year In Recorded History

- Farmers Need To Fight Against Climate Change To Survive

- We Are Hurtling To The Worst CO2 Levels In Over 200 Million Years
