@jeanne-mayell, thank you for sharing Reasons to be Cheerful.  I had no idea that David Byrne, who I absolutely love, started something this.  We need all the hope and cheer we can get.

I can't figure out how to get it delivered to my inbox.  Maybe through the "Contact us" link?

Portland distillery makes hand sanitizer to give to customers | News | kptv.com

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) – A Portland distillery is now making hand sanitizer and giving it out to customers.

Shine Distillery and Grill already has the equipment and the alcohol for it. They say it just makes sense for them to help keep people healthy right now.

Basically, when they distill the alcohol, the first part that comes out isn’t meant to drink, so they make a cleaner out of it.

High enough alcohol content to use at 80% and legal to make as long as they give it away not sell it!

Time to revive this thread.

This is a wonderful story about a young person of color who is a flight attendant for Southwest.  She ended up having a beautiful conversation with a passenger about race.  The man had been reading the book White Fragility:  Why It's so Hard For White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo.  It became a conversation starter.  Later, that passenger revealed he was the CEO of American Airlines.  I have no idea why the CEO of American was on Southwest but it was meant to be.

The way she speaks about her experience reminds me of many of our community members.

I think I might need to buy that book.

This is a fantastic story of a teenager who cleaned up by himself after a riot for 10 hours because it was the right thing to do.  When  the community found out, what he go back was amazing.

I need to post this someplace.  I am not sure if this is the right place ( seems like I say that a lot around here.. haha).

COVID has given me license to let my gray grow out.  I am going to let myself be authentic -- no more dyeing.  If I don't like it when all is said and done, who says I can't go back to being a brunette or even blonde?

I call my current silver skunk stripe my unicorn horn.  And I am three months in.   I hear it's the next six that will be the toughest. I've decided, for now, not to go with highlights to blend it.  I don't go back to school until August, so I've got some time to let it grow. I may decide to go short when I've got enough gray to work with.

Anyone else a silver sister?

Woo hoo!

Welcome to the club. I am 60 something and stopped dying my hair in my early 50's. I have several auto-immune diseases.. one of them being Hashimotos thyroid disease. My hair is waist length and natural..tho being a red head mine is more cinnamon and sugar than salt and pepper. I actually get many compliments on it. I actually enjoy it now and do not miss the hours and money I spent on hair appointments or the mess and angst of coloring at home. I think you may grow to like not coloring it and embracing it. ?

@parizienne I am 62 but still dye my hair.  I started going grey at 19 and when I talk about letting it go my kids tell me I’m too young yet.   Nice but not true.  I do love a beautiful head of white hair.   One day.   Until then I really want to dye the underneath my beloved purple.   I have to keep it somewhat business like due to where I work.   One day.   Feel good about being who you are.   Took me a long time to get that.  ??‍?

@febbby23 my hair stylist is pushing back a bit saying that at 55 I am too young, but I’ve seen people younger than I am rock the silver, so I think it’s worth a try. It’s only hair. I hope I like it. Right now, it’s day by day. Some days I like it. Others, I’m not so sure.

?

I started graying in my 30s and at 56 now, I'm full gray. I refuse to dye my hair, other than occasionally I'll color it blue or purple at home with vegan-friendly dyes, just for fun. Over the years so many nice people have approached me to say how much they love my hair, and that if they had to do it over, they would not color their hair. Which I very much appreciated, in light of the immense pressure from my dad, of all people, to dye my hair because it made me "look so old." Don't let anyone tell you that gray looks bad. Gray is beautiful!

@parizienne Hair doesn't matter at all!   As we all know real beauty comes from within the soul.  You do you, and no matter what that is - rock it!

@lovendures

Wow! What a conversation for our times! I see you have been discussing hair color/coloring. A very surface level yet ripe with potential discussion.

I watched Perry George Floyd's funeral and it sparked my own mental discussion on why people dye their hair in the first place.

Immediately it brought to mind all of the women without coloring dying hair, eyebrows, eyelashes all colors of the rainbow and people of color bleaching, stripping or buying wigs or extensions in all light colors of the rainbow.

Another surface level thought that led me into far deeper and yes, systemic thoughts on what it means to be a white, black or rainbow purse.

I may never get a chance to go to a bookstore, or even a library (ours closed for earthquake retrofitting for two years (probably double that now) and the small building meant to be used temporarily downtown will now need state funding big time to continue just flashed through my thoughts.

We are on a very tight budget now so if you buy that book i may have to borrow it dear @lovendures.

I am still in isolation though i finally was able to see my final two grandchildren ages 3 and 4 as they came over to pick raspberries and logan berries.

@unk-p both a logan berry is a raspberry/blackberry cross and a marion berry indigenous to Marion County Oregon (where I live) and another wild blackberry hybrid. So very delicious but ultimately short lasting seasonally in comparison to the wild original blackberrys that also grow freely--- far too freely all over here. Longer lasting by months their roots grow under impossible surfaces and come up where little bare feet and old callused ones find them amid the clover and wild English daisies.

The colors and variations and ideosynchriocies of all of God and nature's and mankind's created creatures.

Signed, a 70 year old, waist long hair woman mostly light grey but with the last hald foot of dark brown left to create a *bun. If you have hair of any kind you do not realize how important it can be to those who have none.

unk-p *bun:

a twisted hairdo not cinnamon not in the oven and just lately and occasionally hot and crossed. Hahaha.

Love to you all,

Michele

@michele-b   lol!   it is so good to hear from you!

I have a big gray beard.  It is long enough to make a *bun-  a *chin bun.  Is that a thing?   Been thinking of dyeing it pink, to balance the butchiness of it (even tho i am not a Millennial.  More like a Pre-Millennial.  Ok a Pre-Pre-Millennial).   But once we get closer to November, it will have to be blue.  Tsunami blue.

Oh, I like that idea. Tsunami blue in November. My girls and I have been playing with temp hair color this summer (I am a middle-aged lady with cropped short hair) and I can totally see some awesome blue happenin' then. I will start experimenting... :)

Historically, accidental discoveries have resulted in some of our greatest scientific advances. @unk-p and his thoughts of a "tsunami blue" in November reminded of another such discovery with a huge amount of potential in a range of applications.

Originally seeking to create new materials for solid state electronics --instead Oregon State University students created an enduring new pigment of a very, verybright blue made by combining three compounds.

So @Unk-p, even while I cannot wait to see you in a photo here in November in your man bun-beard of bright blue --you really should consider "YInMn" blue--rom its compound of Yttrium, Indium and Manganese.

Crayola has already named a crayon after it the "Easton". Seriously, the Easton? Tsunami would have been better or better yet "Cascadia" without the tsunami thoughts attached here for our "West-on" (not Easton) Pacific Coast concerns.

In any case here we are back finally on topic. Good People, Good Ideas " and new Discoveries!

As I always tell my husband sooner or later I'm back on track and make my point! I just like being a free spirit with lots of free-association to enjoy the ongoing conversational spiral!

Thank you both for helping tie up my free-wheeling fun and "wild hares" along with both of yours.

My hand's in, 'silver sister'...

I have longer than waist-length & shot with silver (tho some would say gray, hmmph)... never coloured or dyed it since high school (Medieval Times) and since the CV isolation with my electric base heaters on alot, the hair has turned into an unglorious bunch of dry sagebrush.

I am now known as 'The Witch'. Oh well, been called worse things, lols, and do find that label rather flattering anyway.

I have always wanted that lustrous pure silver waterfall, like my dear grandmother's, who never cut her hair in her life ... it lay three feet on the floor. Just a bit high maintenance though....

Maybe it's time to trim and dye with some modern blue ... wonder what I would get called then ?

@dhyanaji

Oh dear dhyanaji. My goodness the gifting of a book is the giving of something so far greater than any most realize.

I have had a bookmark for at least 20 maybe 30 years that reads "A book is a gift that you open again and again."

You just opened my heart as well.

Love to you wise and oh so dear friend.

Love,

Michele

PS

It is just now done and blessings to you in return ?

@michele-b........It would be my humble honor to gift you the book," Why White People Find It So Hard To Talk About Racism " by Robin DeAngelo. If you would kindly give me this opportunity and Our Beloved Jeannie is Onboard, simply supply her with your mailing address via your E-mail and hopefully she will generously pass it on to me via E-Mail. Again, it would be both an honor and a privilege to gift this to you and see it also, hopefully shared with your friends and family.............Blessings

P.S. PLEASE let me know when you've forwarded your mailing address to Jeanne so that I can quickly get the book out to you.........Blessings Friend...
