I hope that DACA is not taking away from the children and now young adult who were brought here by there parents. They did not have a choice.
If anyone has Netflix, please watch living undocumented. I have only watched 3 episodes. I love how the attorneys give the law and explain why they can’t just wait in line to get a green card. It explains how long it takes and why that is also no longer possible because of Clinton. This programs follow immigrants of all race not just Hispanics and shows you what is going on in there lives.
@jessi1978, Thanks for the Netflix information. I can only imagine what these DACA recipients are feeling right now. I'm sending lots of comforting light to them.
Here is some info that breaks down the past and current DACA legal battles:
Propublica just published a video of a boy dying while being held in a small cell at a border facility. He was diagnosed with the flu and 104 degree temperature and instead of being sent to a hospital which is what should have happened, he was sent to this cold concrete prison cell where he died.
In the middle of the night he tosses about restlessly in his concrete hard "bed" then collapses off the "bed" onto the concrete floor. He must have been in agony. There are fans blowing in the room. Another sick child is also sleeping there. No one checked on them for hours, at least that is what the video of his death shows. Then the border patrol lied that they had checked on him when the video evidence shows otherwise. It wasn't until the other sick child awoke and found him collapsed on the floor by the toilet and called the guards that they came in.
I hope when this is all over, this terrible time in our country, that the people who committed these crimes against humanity are held accountable. I don't feel they will, but I hope I'm wrong.
Thank you for sharing this, Jeanne. As painful as it is to apprehend, I agree that we should not look away.
If you can write to your senators and representatives, please demand they take action. Mine are hopeless at present, but seeing this motivates me to do campaign work for progressive candidates--something that will not be easy for me, but I can't just stand by. North Carolina congressional districts have been re-drawn (though still gerrymandered in some places) and we now have a chance to defeat Mark Meadows, one of the flunkies who supports these horrific policies.
Thank you dear friend for your words and suggestions. I keep thinking of how as a teen I learned about the holocaust, and one of the big questions was how could the German citizens sit back and do nothing while it was going on? The Holocaust is of course much worse, but the treatment of these poor people is sub human. We also learned with shame about the Japanese internment. It seers in our history of shame. This treatment of immigrants who are fleeing violence is worse than the Japanese internment.
Now I understand how it's possible to sit back and ignore this horror. We are all reeling from Donald Trump's daily drama so we try not to think about what is happening with these children and parents. It's just too much for people. It is mostly hidden from us and we willingly acquiesce. Well, Propublica won't sit back. Nor should we.
I put it on my FB page and noticed a stark difference between my posts and my "friends" who want to spread joy and fun in their posts. They use FB to show their family gatherings and trips. I understand. I love their posts. Many probably unfollow me. I don't care.
FB is the biggest media giant in the world. It is fastest way to spread a story. I will also call my wonderful congresspeople.
This story was in the network world news on ABC last night too - they showed the entire video!
It’s all over the news channels and FB. I can’t watch the video it’s too hard. I have boys and I can see my 14yr as him. What I can’t understand is how Malaria gets all mad about her son names being mentioned as an example but not a kid dying or the kids in cages.
You have to realize that the t***** gang believe they are better than everyone else. They believe they are special, therefore deserve special treatment. And we are indoctrinated to believe that the money dictates a person’s value. Anyone who is poor, or an immigrant is beneath them and their lives are of no value . The t**** gang believe they are “royalty”. But people don’t realize that royalty doesn’t exist. It is an illusion created on this planet by the ancients. Whenever I see anything on the news about the British “royals” I laugh to myself that people still believe that these “royals” are any different than any of us. I have said to others, “You know royalty doesn’t exist” only to have them get all bent out of shape and then defend the “royals.” I believe in God’s Eyes we are all One, and the poorest is just as valued and loved as the rich. Something many do not understand or believe.
In the unmoored weeks after Trump was elected, I had a very disturbing dream. I was really upset about what would happen to the Standing Rock protectors, and dreamed one night that I was watching a narrated documentary about a young woman who was disappeared and jailed by the T administration for her environmental activism. Yet in the dream, I was simultaneously experiencing everything from the firsthand perspective of the woman. At one point, she was in a dark, utterly desolate prison cell, and she thought to herself, "I'm going to die here. And no one who cares about me knows where I am." Having watched the Propublica video, I can sense how those thoughts probably went through Carlos's mind as he died in border patrol custody.
Everyone has their own response to dealing with disturbing disclosures like this. For me, I don't think I'm ready yet to spread the word and make noise about the Propublica report. I have to sit for a few days and internalize the evil captured in that video. Only then can I proceed in an effective way.
I don't understand them either. I don't understand any of T, his family, the GOP minions - any of them who do any of these atrocities. It takes much energy to be negative and do horrible things to people. Have you ever snapped at someone or gone out of your way to tell someone off (even justifiably)? I have and whenever I did it I felt AWFUL later. Even if I was right.
So I just don't get how these people live with themselves. To me it says their souls are very dark and they just don't have the compassion most of us do. It's very sad to say the least.
@Unkp That took my breath away. Here's a story about it https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/09/us/nativity-scene-cages-claremont.html
I write on Quora. Sometimes about politics. I read people's posts and comments that justify the border policy with either Obama did it first rhetoric or the parents are criminals by crossing the border. I never see any empathy, just a cold interpretation of reality that sorts people into good and bad based on very primitive ideals. I am scared, I have been scared for a long time. My heart has been heavy. Part of me feels responsible at least in part because I haven't done enough to try and stop this, I've allowed myself to continue living day to day in these times. The why of it all is something I can't understand. Why do people hate so much? Why do people look away? What happens after, when it's all over? What will DT's cult say in 10, 15, 20 years? Will justice or closure ever happen?
I'm so sorry for the negativity of the post.
Without facing the darkness within we become even darker .
It is an essential part of human nature to catalog people in groups . And you only allow certain emotions to be expressed within each groups .
Most people confine kindness to their family . They are not kind to strangers . Most people try to keep hatred away from their family, but let them hear about some horrible murder or rape and they will be all knifes out, death penalty, torture and "eye for an eye" to the perpetrator . You don't give empathy to them, you give it to the victim .
We humans, we love, we nurture, we hate, we murder .
In order to fit in society we just have to feel and do "the alleged right thing" to "the right group" . Great problems arise when people and emotions are cataloged wrong . Until now, cataloging is mostly unconscious.
Immigrants are people . Seeking a better life is a virtue, not a crime . To harm them is a crime . We are often cruel and rarely wise .
I have faith in the future, in perfect justice when we reach omniscience . I believe everyone deserves love and a path of redemption, even the worse . But the victims will be among the ones chosing that path, until they are satisfied justice was served .
I'm so moved by everyone's posts. When will people learn that we're all the same, and that we should welcome those in need?
I have a couple of suggestions for those who'd like to offer some help. The Dilley Pro Bono Project is an organization that helps prepare mothers and their children to pass the first level interview to be able to then apply for asylum in the U.S. I volunteered there last year and it's a great project. They have obtained permission from ICE that will allow the center's chaplain to take coloring/puzzle/activity books for children and adults, as well as picture books in Spanish, to the moms and families in the detention center. (No crayons please or pens/pencils.) If you'd like to send any of these items you can do so to: Chaplain Garza, 300 El Rancho Way, Dilley, TX, 78017.
For folks who'd like to make a financial donation, RAICES is a great place to give money to. They help asylum-seekers post bond, even large ones, with very little hassle. The ACLU is also great. They're suing the heck out of this administration.

What wonderful, wonderful suggestions of simple things any of us could do.
I am a big Dollar Store shopper. They have wonderful colorings books, activity/coloring combos, and activity books with games puzzles, dot to dot etc. books for just $1 a piece. They also have small lightweight picture/story books many in Spanish also for $1 each. A large manilla envelope could hold S10 worth easily. The selecting and packing them up will put our caring hearts and willing hands into a very simple service. Lets try to get some to these little ones before Christmas if we can!
Thank you for such a beautiful direction for people. It is so hard to sit back and not be able to do anything. So this is so good.
I have shared your perspective, and ask the same question over and over: why do people act like this?
@thebeast, your post says it all. I've read it twice for its light.
I ask to understand the people who support these policies, not the leaders -- I'm not ready to probe what goes on in their heads, but the followers from the public. Somedays I don't want to understand them, I am just so angry and despairing for the hurt we witness in the news.
But then I get flashes of insight that the Trumpers are innocent because of their ignorance and distance from the victims.
I know some Trump followers who feel negatively about migrants and close their hearts to their suffering. Yet I also know these people to be generous with friends, family, and people who are like them. You say that's not okay that they limit their generosity and empathy to just their family and friends, and I agree.
But on a good day, I get flashes that these folks can't help it. They are just not oriented that way. For their hearts to open, they would have to get more first hand experience with the people they seem to hate.
I dreamed a while back, and I mentioned in a post, that I was in a room with Nancy Pelosi. She didn't see me but I was definitely in that room with her. And she was kneeling, her back turned to me, praying. I didn't know she prayed. A few weeks later, a reporter asked if she hated Trump. She erupted at the reporter saying she doesn't hate Donald Trump and prays for him everyday.
Some angel must have sent that dream about her to me, the same one who is whispering to me now.
I'm not telling anyone how they should see these people. I'm just saying what flashes in my mind when I ask why they are this way. Again I'm not talking about the leaders of this dark movement. I still can't figure them out.
